ABSTRACT

Long-term consumption of olive oil helps reduce the risks of developing a series of diseases including cardiovascular disease, nervous system disease, cancer, etc. The minor compounds of olive oil, especially the star molecule--hydroxytyrosol, play an important role in these beneficial effects on human health. As a polyphenolic compound, hydroxytyrosol not only act as antioxidant and scavenge oxidizing substances directly, but also inhibit oxidative stress by regulating the Nrf2 antioxidant system. Thus, hydroxytyrosol has great potential in the prevention and treatment of oxidative damage related diseases. This review focuses mainly on recent progresses in pharmacological effects of hydroxytyrosol on nervous system disease, angiocardiopathy, metabolic syndrome, inflammation and cancer.

ABSTRACT

Myocardial metabolism activating drugs can increase the energy supply and decrease the energy consumption of the myocardial cells, playing a role in the nourishment and protection of cardiac muscles and the optimization of the energy metabolism. It is the adjuvant drug in treatment of myocarditis, myocardiosis, severe arrhythmia, acute or chronic heart failure and cardiosurgery, with an irreplaceable role in the salvage therapy of severe angiocardiopathy.Due to its safety and little side effects,it has been widely used in pediatrics.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the relationship between carotid atherosclerotic plaque and multiple risk factors of angiocardiopathy, and to evaluate the injuries caused by different risk factors to subclinical target organ to control the general risk factors of angiocardiopathy. Methods Four hundred and twenty six outpatients and impatients, treated in our hospital from May 2007 to May 2009 with the results of color ultrasonic examination, were divided into carotid atherosclerotic plaque group(284 cases) and no carotid atherosclerotic plaque group( 142 cases). The clinical information including their age, body mass index, smoking condition, past medical history such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipoidemia were recorded, and the levels of total cholesterol(T C),high density lipoprotein cholesterol( HDL-C),low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C),triglyceride (TG),lipoprotein ( a ) ( LP (a) ),apolipoprotein A - 1 ( Apo A 1 ),apolipoprotein B ( Apo B ),highsensitivity C-reactive protein( hs-CRP),homocysteine ( HCY),microalbuminuria( MAU ) and uricacid(UA) were determined by lab tests. The independent variable and univariable data were processed and analyzed statistically to find out the risk factors of carotid atherosclerotic plaque. Results Age and drinking were significantly correlated with the carotid intima-media wall thickening(IMT) (P < 0.001 ).Overweight, diabetes mellitus, increased LP (a),hyperlipoidemia, age, increased MAU and HCY could independently predict carotid atherosclerosis and plaque formation ( x2 =71.35,38.45,t =3.26,x2 =37.23,t =118.51,6.723 and 3.17respectively,Ps < 0.05 ).The aggregated number of the risk factors was correlated to IMT and carotid atherosclerotic plaque ( P =0.0001 ).Conclusion Age,drinking, overweight, diabetes mellitus, increased LP (a),hyperlipoidemia,MAU and HCY are risk factors of carotid atherosclerosis and plaque formation, and the contribution of each factor can multiply and overlap, more risk factors means greater risk.

ABSTRACT

In the past few years,it has been disclosed that identified epigenetic processes and epigenetic changes are involved in human diseases.Disorders of these processes may influence chromatin structure and gene expression, which may result in complicated syndroms,multiple-factor diseases and cancers. The researchprogress of epigenetic processes of several diseases is reviewed in this paper.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze obese children serum lipid level in order to understand the relationship between serum lipid and cardiovascular disease in obese children. Methods One hundred and fifty-three children(109 male and 44 female)aged 4-16 years old with obesity who attended the outpatient clinic of Beijing Children′s Hospital were collected.Percentage body fat (%BF),body fat (BF),fat-free mass (FFM) was estimated by using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and calculate.Waist and hip circumference,waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) was estimated by soft tape measure and calculate.Skinfold thickness of scapular bone below (S) and triceps muscle (T),S/T rate was estimated by skin fold meter and calculate.Serum total cholesterol (TC),triglyceride(TG),high density lipoprotein(HDL-C),low density lipoprotein(LDL-C),apolipoprotein(Apo) AI and Apo B levels were also measured.SPSS 11.0 software was used to analyzed the data. Results The cardiovascular disease related was the prevalence of high TC levels(3.3%)or high LDL-C level(6.0%) and high TG level(24.7%) was rather low.HDL-C level was reduced in 31.3% of obese children. In children over 10 years old,%BW and %BF showed a weak correlation with HDL-C(r=-0.202,-0.211).Conclusions In obese children, serum lipid as well as Apo level should be exa-mined in order to evaluate angiocardiopathy.
